Custom development

When off-the-shelf software does not fit, we build what does.

StudioRav, an award-winning custom ecommerce development agency, designs and builds custom software for UK businesses whose processes do not fit off-the-shelf tools. That includes web applications, customer and supplier portals, dashboards, order management and modernised legacy PHP systems. We map the process first, prototype early, and release in stages with tests and documentation.

What we build

What custom software can StudioRav build?

Software shaped around one business process, owned by you and designed to be maintained. Typical projects fall into a few groups.

Web applications and customer or supplier portals

Dashboards and reporting built on your own data

Bespoke order management and internal workflow tools

Custom content management for unusual editorial needs

MVPs to test a product idea before committing to a full build

Where the work involves other systems, we also build the APIs and integrations that connect your new software to the tools you already run.

Common builds

Can you build client portals, booking systems and internal tools?

Yes. Beyond one-off applications, we build client portals and customer areas, booking and scheduling systems, internal tools and dashboards, and headless sites. We map the process first, deliver in stages and connect the result to the systems your team already uses day to day.

Client portals and customer areas

Secure logins where customers or suppliers can see orders, documents, status or account details without emailing your team.

Booking and scheduling systems

Availability, appointments and reminders built around how you actually take bookings, rather than a generic plugin.

Internal tools and dashboards

Tools that replace spreadsheets and re-keying, with reports built on your own data for the people who run the business.

Headless builds

A Next.js front end with a CMS such as Payload, for fast pages and a smaller attack surface. It suits some projects; for many, WordPress is the better fit.

Most builds connect to tools you already run through integrations and APIs. Agencies can also bring us in white-label as a development partner.

Legacy systems

Can you modernise an old PHP application?

Often, yes. We review the code, data and hosting first, then decide whether to upgrade in place, refactor in stages or rebuild. The aim is a supported runtime, version control, tests and documentation, without stopping the business.

Process-led

We map how the work really happens before we write a line of code.

Staged delivery

Working releases at each stage, so you can test early and steer.

Tested

Automated tests and review on the code that matters most.

Documented

Code and architecture written up so another team can pick it up.

Build or buy

When is custom software worth it?

Custom is not always the answer. We will tell you if an existing product, or a small change to your current setup, would do the job.

Custom tends to make sense when

The process is a real competitive difference for you

Several off-the-shelf tools are held together by manual work

You need to own the data, logic and roadmap

Licences and workarounds cost more over time than a build

Off-the-shelf tends to make sense when

An existing product already covers most of what you need

The process is standard and unlikely to change

You need to be live quickly with minimal budget

You do not have capacity to own and maintain software

For stores, see how ecommerce development and Shopify development cover the common cases before custom work is needed. Custom sites and portals can be made easy to find too: see our SEO and visibility service.

How projects work

How does a custom development project work?

Five stages, built so you can see progress and change direction early.

Map the process

Workshops and review of how work happens today, and where it breaks.

Specify

A written specification with scope, data model and acceptance criteria.

Prototype

A clickable or working prototype so you can test before full build.

FAQs

Custom development questions, answered

What is custom software development?

It means software designed and built for your specific process, rather than adapted from a generic product. You own the result, it is designed to be maintained, and it does exactly what your workflow needs. We map how the work really happens first, then build in reviewed stages.

How much does custom development cost?

It depends on scope. We give a written estimate after a scoping stage that produces a written specification, and building in stages lets you control spend. We will also say if an existing product or a small change to your setup would do the job. Request a quote to start the conversation.

Can you take over code written by someone else?

Yes. We start with a review of the code, data and hosting, then recommend whether to maintain, upgrade in place, refactor in stages or rebuild, with the reasons. The aim is a supported runtime, version control, tests and documentation, without stopping your business.

Do we own the code?

That is agreed in the project terms before work begins. Our approach is that you receive the code, documentation and access you need to maintain it. The software is designed to be maintained, with code and architecture written up so another team can pick it up.

Can you build an MVP first?

Yes. We build MVPs to test a product idea before committing to a full build. A focused first version lets you try the idea with real users, and delivery in stages, with a working release at each one, means you can steer early and control spend.

Can you build a client portal or booking system?

Yes. We build client portals, booking and scheduling systems, internal tools, dashboards and headless sites using Next.js with a CMS such as Payload. We map the process first and deliver in stages. See our integrations service for connecting them to your other systems.

Can the software connect to our other systems?

Yes. We build APIs, webhooks and scheduled syncs to connect your new software to your store, CRM, ERP and accounting tools, so staff are not re-keying data. Where several systems are involved, we agree the data mapping first. See our integrations service.
